I am Cath'lic hear me roar!: A (lengthy) review of REP's Altar Boyz
by David Platz
Sunday, we met another group of boys dedicating their lives to God in a more unconventional way… We were in for saving and blessings of another kind though Repertory Philippines’ Altar Boyz.
The premise is simple and ensures nonstop hilarity: What if there was an openly Catholic Boy Band ala-N’SYNC or the Backstreet Boys? The show is a mock concert—
the last of the group’s “Raise the Praise Tour.” Here, the Boyz sing and groove to save the burdened souls of the audience. (HOW they monitor this task is something you have to see for yourselves!)
To those among you who’ve followed my more recent theater-posts here, it must be obvious that I’ve been an Altarholic even before this Manila production. (Thus, forgive me for this quite lengthy review. I just have to get it out of my system, hehe.)
Coming into the theater, I expected a lot from this production. Fortunately, I had a great time and wasn’t disappointed.

The AltarBoyz: Jesus on Speed-dial
by Katrina Holigores
...So what happens when you throw God and his musical stylings in the mix? You get the musical, the Altar Boyz. Although the premise sounds preachy—all boy Christian band out to rock the devil outta you, the delivery was heavenly entertainment. The energy exuded from complex dance routines, comic timing and vocal blending by the five boys...

Sweetly Sardonic Musical on Boy-band Craze
by Gibbs Cadiz
A Christian Boy Band?
You can start laughing now--but only in appreciation. Daft concept notwithstanding, the bopping, grooving, shimmying band of young holy warriors who constitute Repertory Philippines’ Altar Boyz has unleashed a darn good show.

Manila Leg of the Altar Boyz World Tour Concert Reviewed
By Fritz Tentativa
The side-splitting instances in the show were mostly courtesy of the lyrics in some songs which led me to expect something nasty else, witty one-liners, in-character delivery, almost everything that Red Concepcion’s character (Mark) does, and the ridiculous lengths the boyz would willingly go through in order to ease the burden of all the souls in the audience. It’s surprising to see that the “ways of religion” everyone is too familiar with can be shamelessly expressed, professed, and imbibed in permutations of the unorthodox media that is pop music. This makes Altar Boyz both hilarious and ingenious.

Ooh, look, a Catholic boyband
By Sharline Bareng
It's no secret that I liked boybands as a kid--it's something you can't help when you're growing with 30 boy-crazy girls all through the six years of elementary school. So you can pretty much imagine how I reacted when I heard about Repertory Philippines' Altar Boyz:
I squeed. Of course.

Holy Hit!
by Spell Micael
I was able to convince my whole family to join me in watching Altar Boyz by Repertory Philippines awhile ago at Greenbelt! We loved it! I personally laughed out loud because I am Catholic and I was able to get many if not all of their punch lines. Some of their funny lines reminds me of the jokes priests tell in their homily. Man, we Catholics love to make fun but harmless jokes about ourselves! The last time I laughed out loud in a theater was when I watched Shrek 2.

What Filipino Catholics Say About Altar Boyz Manila
By Lorna Lopez
I knew it was important to get reactions from members of the Catholic faith regarding the musical comedy Altar Boyz since it had elements that could be considered offensive to Catholics; so I invited a Catholic priest and nun, and active Catholic members of their respective churches.
Disclaimer: However, all opinions expressed here does not reflect the views of the whole Catholic Church, nor of their respective parishes or publications, but are the personal views of each person concerned in exercising their right to free expression and speech.

Jesus thought it was awesome (and so did I)
Originally supposed to be entitled "Jesus wants to hump this musical (and so do I)," but, hmm. Too blasphemous?
By Julie Cruz

Huh. Boybands + religion + indifferent atheist me. Should be interesting.
What I loved most about the musical (besides it being witty and hilarious) was— in true boyband fashion— the stereotyping of the band members ( I’m a huge fan of stereotypes and mainly for retarded reasons).

Altar Boyz: Why The Hell Was I Invited For This Again?
By Benj Espina
When the show started, I was immediately affirmed that yes, it was a good idea to show up and watch it. From the get-go, it was clear what the entire play was going to be about.
... Of course, the campy fun that the Altar Boyz showed was refreshing. They were a joke - a loose yet extremely entertaining coalescence of faith, music and choreography —that didn’t take take themselves seriously. They knew they were not to be taken seriously and just as Gibbs said, it was all tongue-in-cheek.

PEP REVIEW: Repertory’s "Altar Boyz"
By Jocelyn Dimaculangan
As soon as you see the Altar Boyz Confession Box at the lobby of Onstage Theater in Greenbelt 1, you know you're in for a fun ride. If something is bothering your soul, feel free to confess it and the Christian boy band will pray over it during the show. Once you got that out of your system, that will be a great help to the five boys who want to save souls using the glory of sweet pop music.

Altar Boyz: Raise the Praise Tour Manila Leg
By Arbet Bernardo
So there I was at Onstage Greenbelt last night, seated at center for a preview, and a rather cheeky voice blared something cheeky, announcing that the Altar Boyz would electrify audiences within two minutes. There I became confused: is this a musical or is this a concert? Dummy, my rational side chided me, it was the concept of the play. Yeah, must be due to an empty stomach.
So the lights were turned off, the band started playing, and five guys began singing and dancing. And then it was laughter galore, thanks to the members of the Altar Boyz.
The play-within-a-concert (or is it a concert-within-a-play) is entertaining, funny, and hilarious but with a serious undertone, as satires should. It plays on the boyband stereotypes, from matinee idol leader, to a gay member, to an ethnic member. Add religion to the mix, and you get satire at its best.
